Venus Williams ousted in Moscow

Williams falls during Kremlin Cup.

Venus Williams was beaten in the opening round for the second time in 12 tennis tournaments this season, losing 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 to Flavia Pennetta of Italy at the Kremlin Cup on Tuesday in Moscow.

The Wimbledon champion, who also lost in the first round at Memphis in March, dropped to 1-3 against Pennetta.

On the men's side, the winners included two-time defending champion Nikolay Davydenko and Marat Safin, runner-up to Davydenko in 2006.

STOCKHOLM OPEN: Top-seeded David Nalbandian cruised past American Bobby Reynolds 6-1, 6-1 in Sweden. Second-seeded Mario Ancic of Croatia also advanced to the second round.

BA TENNIS TROPHY: Top-seeded Stanislas Wawrinka was upset 6-7 (5), 6-2, 7-6 (5) Tuesday by German qualifier Philipp Petzschner in the first round in Vienna, Austria.
