N.C. State senior Lauren Doughtie was named Golf World Magazine's Women's Player of the Week on Monday after claiming medalist honors at the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championships on Sunday in Knoxville, Tenn.

Birdies on the 16th and 18th holes gave Doughtie a final-round 68 and a two-shot win, her first individual collegiate title. En route to victory, Doughtie shot a 7-under 209, breaking the school record for best 54-hole performance.

FOOTBALL

ACC HONORS: Three Virginia players have won weekly awards from the ACC.

The league on Monday named Cavaliers running back Cedric Peerman, tackle Eugene Monroe and defensive end Matt Conrath as three of the award winners.

Joining them are North Carolina linebacker Quan Sturdivant and kicker Casey Barth, and Georgia Tech defensive end Derrick Morgan.

Sturdivant returned an interception 32 yards for a game-changing touchdown in the Tar Heels' 29-24 victory over Notre Dame. Barth kicked three field goals.

KENTUCKY LOSES RECEIVER: Senior wide receiver Dicky Lyons Jr.'s Kentucky career is over after an MRI exam revealed a second ligament tear in his leg.

BASKETBALL

NEW HAWAII TOURNEY: ESPN and the University of Hawaii have announced a new eight-team, holiday men's college basketball tournament starting in 2009.

The Diamond Head Classic will feature 12 games played over three days, around the Dec. 24 Hawaii Bowl football game, with the championship played on Christmas. No teams were announced Monday.

SOCCER

UNC'S SHRIVER HONORED: North Carolina senior forward Brian Shriver, who scored twice in the Tar Heels' 2-0 win at Duke last Friday, was named national player of the week by TopDrawerSoccer.com on Monday. Additionally, Shriver was named to the site's national team of the week and also claimed a spot on the College Soccer News National Team of the Week.

CAMELS' JOHNSON TOP DEFENDER: Campbell senior goalkeeper Aaron Johnson earned his second Atlantic Sun Conference men's soccer defensive player of the week honor this season Monday.

Johnson allowed only one goal in two games as the Camels ran their win streak to four matches, all against conference opponents.

MONDAY'S RESULTS

MEN'S GOLF

BRICKYARD COLLEGIATE CHAMPIONSHIP: Duke finished seventh and Wake Forest 10th in the event at Macon, Ga.

Duke had an 878 total, 19 strokes behind winner Georgia (859). Georgia Tech was second at 864. Wake Forest had an 883 total in the 15-team event.

Wake Forest was led by Daniel Meggs, who finished tied for ninth at 216, five strokes behind medalist Cameron Tringale of Georgia Tech. Duke was led by Michael Quagliano, who tied for 13th at 217.

DUKE INDIVIDUAL COLLEGIATE: Vanderbilt's John Ebert shot a two-round score of 2-under-par 140 to take the lead in the event at Durham.

North Carolina's Chase MacFarland was two strokes back after shooting at 142.

N.C. State's Chad Day was tied for sixth at 145, and teammate Andrew Byrd was tied for ninth at 146. East Carolina's Tripp Brizendine was tied for 12th at 147.

JERRY PATE NATIONAL INTER- COLLEGIATE: North Carolina was is in fourth place after shooting a 3-over-par 283 in the first round at Birmingham, Ala.

The Tar Heels are five strokes behind host Alabama and SMU, which share the lead with a 2-under-par 278.

Sophomore Kevin O'Connell of Cary led the Tar Heels with a 3-under-par 67. O'Connell is in a three-way tie for second place after the first round.
