Broncos shut down Warriors to stay unbeaten

Kellen Moore threw three touchdown passes, and cornerback Brandyn Thompson had three interceptions to lead No. 15 Boise State to a 27-7 victory over Hawaii on Friday night.

The Broncos (6-0, 2-0 Western Athletic Conference) intercepted Hawaii's Inoke Funaki five times, turning three of them into 17 second-half points that put the game away.

The Broncos' smothering defense pressured Funaki all night, sacking him five times and holding the Warriors (3-4, 2-2) to 288 total yards.

Moore finished 25-of-34 for 256 yards. The left-hander's three touchdown passes gave him 16 on the season and 11 over the last four games.

IOWA COACH SUSPENDS SON: Iowa football coach Kirk Ferentz has suspended his son from the Hawkeyes football team after he was cited for drinking underage.

James Ferentz, a freshman offensive lineman, was cited by Iowa City Police for drinking underage early Friday morning.

MEN'S BASKETBALL

NEVADA SUSPENDS THREE: Nevada starting guard Brandon Fields and two incoming freshmen have been suspended from the basketball team indefinitely after being cited for misdemeanor petty larceny, Wolf Pack coach Mark Fox said Thursday.

London Giles, a 6-foot-3 guard from Dallas, and Ahyaro Phillips, a 6-8 forward from New Orleans, were suspended along with Fields, a 6-4 guard and the third-leading scorer (12.4) on last season's team, after their release by Sparks police following an undisclosed incident on Wednesday, Fox said in a statement.

PITT'S FIELDS SIDELINED: Pittsburgh's Levance Fields, one of the Big East's top guards, will miss the start of preseason practice while he recovers from a second operation on his left foot.

Fields was sidelined for seven weeks last season after breaking his foot. He returned to help lead Pitt to the third round of the NCAA Tournament, only to reinjure the foot in August.

RODNEY ODOM, 38, DIES: Athletic officials at Charlotte released a statement that former 49ers starting center Rodney Odom, 38, died Wednesday night in his hometown of Kingwood, Texas.

Odom was a transfer from UCLA and a three-year starter for Charlotte, helping the 49ers reach the NCAA Tournament in 1992 and the National Invitation Tournament in 1994.

WOMEN'S SOCCER

UNC 5, N.C. STATE 0: ACC scoring leader Casey Nogueira notched four goals, giving her 17 for the season, to lead second-ranked North Carolina over N.C. State at the N.C. State Soccer Stadium.

UNC (14-1-1, 7-0-0 ACC) scored four times in just over a 10-minute span of the first half to take control against the Wolfpack (8-8, 0-6).

Allie Long had the other goal for the Tar Heels.

MEN'S SOCCER

N.C. STATE 2, CLEMSON 0: Junior Federico Nachmann scored in the 71st minute, and redshirt freshman Kris Byrd got his first career goal in the 86th to lead visiting N.C. State over Clemson.

It was the first ACC win this sason for State (5-7-2, 1-4).

The Wolfpack outshot Clemson (4-6-2, 2-3-1) 21-8, and junior goalie Christopher Widman made four saves for the shutout.

FIELD HOCKEY

DUKE 7, WILLIAM & MARY 1: Marian Dickinson scored a hat trick and added an assist to lead No. 5 Duke to a road victory over William & Mary.

The Blue Devils improved to 11-3 with their fifth straight win. William & Mary fell to 4-10.

WOMEN'S GOLF

BLUMENHERST FIRES 70: Duke senior Amanda Blumenherst carded a 1-under-par 70 on Friday in the first round of the Stanford Intercollegiate.

UCLA leads the team standings at 7-under 277, followed by Oklahoma State (278), Southern California (279), Stanford (279), Arizona (282), Arkansas (282), New Mexico (282), California (284) and Duke (285) rounded out the top nine squads.

Oklahoma State's Caroline Masson leads the individual standings with a 6-under 65.

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

UNC WINS BLUE RIDGE OPEN: The North Carolina men's cross country team was back in action for the first time in two weeks and captured the 26-team Blue Ridge Open in Boone.

Zack Dawson led UNC (43 points) with a fourth-place finish in 24 minutes, 22 seconds.

Queens University -- fifth-ranked in Division II -- was second with 53 points, followed by Duke (62), host Appalachian State (119) and Clemson.

Bo Waggoner was Duke's top finisher, fifth in 24:38.
