Anosike 'Woman of the Year'

Former Tennessee basketball star Nicky Anosike was honored as the NCAA Woman of the Year at a dinner Sunday night.

Anosike helped guide the Lady Vols to consecutive NCAA championships in 2007 and 2008.

The award honors student-athletes who have completed their college eligibility, demonstrated academic and athletic excellence, and engaged in community service and leadership opportunities.

Former Mount Olive College women's volleyball and track and field student-athlete Samantha "Sam" Mitchell was among the nine finalists and 30 conference honorees overall who were recognized during the ceremony.

Mitchell became Mount Olive's fourth Conference Carolinas Woman of the Year honoree in three years and the first to be a finalist for the award.

CAMPBELL'S JATA HONORED: Richard Jata was named the Atlantic Sun Conference men's soccer player of the week Monday.

ECU'S CAMPBELL HONORED: Senior goalkeeper Amber Campbell has been named Defensive Player of the Week by Conference USA, according to an announcement by the league on Monday.

GEORGETOWN INTERCOLLEGIATE: Victor Hielte and Zak Drescher are tied for fourth place individually, both posting scores of 75, and Campbell (295) stands in a tie for third with William & Mary after Monday's first round at Beallsville, Md. Miami (Ohio) (287) leads the event, with Richmond (291) second.

VOLLEYBALL

ST. AUG'S 3, J.C. SMITH 0: Sophomore middle blocker Stephony Newkirk amassed 16 kills to lead St. Augustine's to a victory over visiting Johnson C. Smith on Monday. The Falcons won 25-14, 25-12, 25-18.
