It was only moments before coming onto the court for his first game as a collegian that Sylven Landesberg found out he was in the starting lineup.

Two hours later, he had everyone gushing.

"When you flirt with a triple-double right out of the box, that tells you something," Virginia coach Dave Leitao said after Landesberg broke Virginia's freshman-debut scoring record with 28 points and added eight assists and eight rebounds in a 107-97 victory against Virginia Military Institute.

"It was fun," said Landesburg, a 6-foot-6 swingman. "The energy in the building was ridiculous."

Landesberg broke Jeff Lamp's record of 24 points in a freshman debut, set 31 years ago, and Jeff Jones shook off a shaky start with two late 3-pointers.

The Cavaliers deprived the Keydets (1-1) of a second stunning victory in the season's first three days. VMI beat Kentucky 111-103 Friday night at Rupp Arena, and Leitao said that game prompted him to go to a smaller lineup.

"It was a little bit of a wake-up call," Leitao said of the VMI win he saw live and on tape.

Virginia started four guards and forward Mike Scott, moving Landesberg into the lineup in lieu of center Tunji Soroye, who didn't play a single minute Sunday night.
