FUQUAY-VARINA -- Fuquay-Varina surrendered 17 second-half points to Fayetteville Byrd and lost 17-14 in the second round of the 4-AA playoffs.
Eagles kicker Danny Fischer booted a game-winning 31-yard field goal with 16 seconds left in the game Friday night.
Byrd (10-3) will play either New Hanover (8-5) or Fayetteville Cape Fear (7-6) in the third round.
The Fuquay defense handled everything that Byrd could dish out in the first half, holding the Eagles to 61 total yards.
But the Bengals had to fight for every yard also.
Cory Mixon gave Fuquay a 6-0 halftime lead with a 6-yard run late in the first quarter.
Byrd scored two touchdowns in the third quarter to take a 14-6 lead heading into the final period.
Bengals running back Cory Hunter (23 carries, 134 yards) led Fuquay on a 10-play, 80-yard drive to tie the score.
Mixon scored on a 11-yard run and Kyle Canfield tossed the two-point conversion pass to Kenny Weatherman.
Byrd drove from its 20 to the Fuquay 4-yard line before kicking the winning field goal.
"It is hard to lose the way we lost it," Fuquay-Varina coach Ryan Habich said. "We got to the red zone, but didn't put enough points up.
"Our kids have played hard all year."
