Wilson, Eskridge named to first team by Conference USA

Four players from conference champion East Carolina were named to the Conference USA All-Conference team, which was announced on Tuesday.

Pirates defensive lineman C.J. Wilson and defensive back Van Eskridge were first-team selections and offensive lineman Sean Allen and linebacker Pierre Bell were second-team choices.

ECU defensive back Emanuel Davis was named to the C-USA all-freshman team.

Wilson has started 22 consecutive games and led C-USA with 18.5 tackles for loss. Eskridge is tied for second on the ECU team with 89 total tackles.

MORE FOOTBALL

SOONERS' WILSON CLAIMS BROYLES AWARD: Oklahoma offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson was given the Broyles Award on Tuesday as the nation's top assistant coach.

The Sooners, who will play Florida in the BCS title game, have scored at least 60 points in five straight games and have totaled and NCAA-record 702 points this season.

Wilson credited his players and his fellow assistants on the Oklahoma staff.

The other finalists were Florida defensive coordinator Charlie Strong, Utah defensive coordinator Gary Andersen, TCU defensive coordinator Dick Bumpas and Ball State offensive coordinator Stan Parrish.

DRADDY TROPHY: California center Alex Mack won the Draddy Trophy on Tuesday night, given to the top senior scholar-athlete in college football.

He beat out 14 other players from all levels of college football, including Missouri quarterback Chase Daniel and Texas Tech quarterback Graham Harrell, and received the award at the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame awards banquet.

Mack graduated with 3.61 grade-point average and a bachelor's degree in legal studies, and is working on a master's in education. He's also an All-America candidate and an NFL prospect.

TUBERVILLE GETS SUPPORT: Dozens of Auburn University students and alumni marched across campus to the president's mansion Tuesday to protest the school's treatment of former football coach Tommy Tuberville.

University officials say Tuberville resigned on his own last week after a decade that included an undefeated season and a Southeastern Conference title. But many demonstrators claimed that administrators and powerful boosters forced him out after a 5-7 record that included a 36-0 loss to Alabama.

BASKETBALL

FLORIDA'S ALLEN MAY BE OUT FOR SEASON: Florida forward Adam Allen, sidelined the last six weeks because of a sprained left knee, might not play again this season.

Allen plans to test his knee in a few weeks, but coach Billy Donovan said the 6-foot-8 sophomore also is considering taking a medical redshirt this season.

WILLAMETTE WOMEN'S COACH DIES: Willamette University women's basketball coach Bruce Henderson collapsed at Monday's practice and later died from the apparent heart attack.

Henderson, 47, was in his fourth season at the Division III school in Salem, Ore. A game scheduled for Tuesday night was canceled, and the team won't resume competition until after the holiday break.
