Rafael Furcal is staying with the Los Angeles Dodgers, reaching a preliminary agreement Wednesday on a $33 million, three-year contract.
Furcal finalized his decision late in the afternoon, The Associated Press reported.
A day earlier, Furcal had been close to accepting a $30 million, three-year offer from the Atlanta Braves, his original major league team.
Postscript to the story of the local Boston Red Sox fan whose condominium was apparently vandalized by a Yankees fan: Sean Bunn is trying to turn a miserable night into a happy ending with an eBay auction to raise money for The Jimmy Fund, the Red Sox's charitable arm, which in turn contributes to the Dana Farber Cancer Research Institute in Boston.
The auction, which will end at 6 a.m. Friday, includes some of the items damaged in the October break-in, such as dress shirts spray-painted with Yankees uniform numbers such as Derek Jeter's No. 2 and Alex Rodriguez's No. 13. Some memorabilia unrelated to the incident have been added to "Seanster's Red Sox Package," such as baseballs autographed by 2008 American League MVP Dustin Pedroia, 1967 AL Cy Young Award winner Jim Lonborg and current Sox pitching prospect Daniel Bard, formerly of UNC.
There's a lot more. To check it out, go online to www.triangleredsox- nation.org and click on photos, or go to www.ebay.com and search for "Seanster's Red Sox Package." As of Wednesday evening, the leading bid was $203.25.
ROGER VAN DER HORST
Furcal, 31, hit .357 with five homers and 16 RBIs last season but was limited to 36 games and 143 at-bats by back problems. He had back surgery July 3 and was sidelined until the season's final week, but he started each of the Dodgers' eight playoff games, hitting .258 with one homer, three RBIs and nine runs scored.
METS NOT FOR SALE: The Wilpon family, owners of the New York Mets, may have lost hundreds of millions of dollars in the wide-ranging fraud case involving Bernard Madoff.
Madoff allegedly stole money from Sterling Equities, the real estate company of Mets owner Fred Wilpon. Jeff Wilpon said the family's holdings are diversified and that the loss will not affect operations of the baseball team. He vehemently stated the team was "uncategorically, totally, completely not for sale."
