CORAL GABLES, FLA. -- James Dews scored 16 points as Miami shook off an early challenge from winless N.C. Central for a 76-42 victory on Saturday.
The Eagles (0-16) stayed within single digits of the Hurricanes (10-3) in the first half and kept it as close as 15-12 after Stevy Worah-Ozimo's field goal with 8:50 left.
Dews' 3-pointer with 1:06 remaining gave Miami its biggest lead of the first half 31-22. The Eagles' Joshua Worthy answered with a 3-pointer with 16 seconds left.
Down by six at halftime, N.C. Central cut Miami's lead to 31-29 after Vincent Davis scored a basket just 2:50 minutes into the second half. Davis led N.C. Central with 10 points.
But Miami followed with 11 unanswered points during a 2:11 minute span early in the second half to claim a 42-29 lead. Dews hit two 3-pointers during the Hurricanes' spurt to break open a close game.
DeQuan Jones scored nine points in a 17-5 run as Miami increased its lead to 62-38 with 5:31 left. Jones finished with a career-high 11 points.
Adrian Thomas 3-point play with 1:58 remaining gave the Hurricanes their first 30-point lead 74-42.
The Hurricanes ended the game on a 10-0 run in the final 3:57. Miami outscored the Eagles 45-17 in the second half.
The victory was Miami's fourth of the season surpassing a 30-point margin.
N.C. Central has lost its games by an average margin of 24 points.
Miami will play its final nonconference game against Florida Atlantic on Monday before resuming ACC play at Boston College January. 10.
