Ogilvy takes lead in PGA opener

Geoff Ogilvy opened the PGA Tour season Thursday without making bogey on his way to a 6-under 67 and a one-shot lead in the Mercedes-Benz Championship in Kapalua, Hawaii.

He leads Ernie Els, Kenny Perry and Johnson Wagner.

Nadal knocked out; Federer advances

Top-ranked Rafael Nadal was eliminated from the Qatar Open, while Roger Federer advanced to the semifinals of the tuneup for the Australian Open.

Nadal lost to Gael Monfils of France 6-4, 6-4. Federer saved three set points to defeat Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany.

Nadal, who cruised through his first two matches of the season-opening event, finished with only 10 winners, while 14th-ranked Monfils had 35.

Monfils will play Andy Roddick in the semifinals. Federer will face Andy Murray.

MORE TENNIS: Venus Williams showed no signs of rustiness after a four-week break, defeating No. 1 Jelena Jankovic of Serbia 6-2, 6-2 Thursday in Hong Kong in an exhibition tournament.

* The Russian brother-sister duo of Dinara Safina and Marat Safin won the mixed doubles match against France to secure a place in today's final against Slovakia at the Hopman Cup.

* Former No. 1 Amelie Mauresmo upset top-seeded Ana Ivanovic in the Brisbane International quarterfinals in Brisbane, Australia, her first victory over a top 10 player in two years.

* Former No. 1 Carlos Moya was stunned in the second round of the Chennai Open in India by a local player ranked No. 202 in the world. Somdev Devvarman, a two-time U.S. collegiate champion, upset the sixth-seeded Moya 4-6, 7-5, 6-4.
