Rex Ryan arrived back at the New York Jets facility early Tuesday morning and never went home.
The Jets coach was too angry about how his defense -- his pride and joy -- allowed the Miami Dolphins to pull one out against it Monday night.
"It absolutely was a humbling experience," Ryan said of the Jets' 31-27 loss at Miami.
New York's defense had given up three touchdowns in the first four games, but allowed three in the fourth quarter against Miami and blew three leads in the second half.
"I mean, that's our time to go for the jugular, and we just never responded," Ryan said. "On defense, it's like, I'm mad, still. That's unacceptable."
Miami did it with lots of wildcat trickery, especially on the game's last drive when four players took snaps and kept New York off balance. Running back Ronnie Brown capped the 13-play drive when he took the snap and scored the winning touchdown on a 2-yard keeper with 6 seconds remaining.
"I've been down that road before where you don't play great on 'D,' and we've always responded," Ryan said. "This is a different group of guys and I've got confidence in this group, and there's one way: When I'm backed in a corner, I'm going to come out swinging, and that's what I'm looking forward to."
Ryan and the Jets (3-2) won't have to wait long with a short week to prepare for Buffalo (1-4) at home.
"This is a must win for us, and I think we have to respond," Ryan said. "I think playing at home in front of our fans is going to be huge for us, but from an organizational standpoint, our entire organization, this week has got to be huge."
Seau returns to Patriots: Junior Seau is back with the New England Patriots, coming out of retirement for a third time to sign a contract Tuesday for a 20th season as an NFL linebacker.
The signing of the 12-time Pro Bowl player was announced by Versus, the television network on which Seau has a show. The Patriots have not announced the signing, which had been expected, although the team said he had a physical and a workout last week.
Seau, 40, came out of retirement last year to play the final four games with the Patriots after playing 27 games with them in 2006 and 2007.
Limbaugh bid draws fire: Rush Limbaugh's bid to buy the St. Louis Rams ran into opposition within the NFL on Tuesday, when Colts owner Jim Irsay vowed to vote against him and commissioner Roger Goodell said the conservative commentator's "divisive" comments would not be tolerated from any NFL insider.
"I, myself, couldn't even consider voting for him," Irsay said at an owners meetings. "When there are comments that have been made that are inappropriate, incendiary and insensitive ... our words do damage, and it's something that we don't need."
Goodell repeatedly distanced the league from Limbaugh's statements on Tuesday, calling them "polarizing comments that we don't think reflect accurately on the NFL or our players."
Steelers' Smith injured: Pittsburgh defensive end Aaron Smith has a right shoulder injury that coach Mike Tomlin said "potentially could be significant."
Smith, injured Sunday in Detroit, was being evaluated Tuesday. The Steelers are not yet certain how long one of their most reliable players will be out, although they apparently are anticipating an extended absence.
Ravens sign Tyree: The Baltimore Ravens have signed former Super Bowl hero David Tyree, who played in 73 games with the New York Giants before being cut last month. Tyree is expected to contribute to special teams, and could see time at wide receiver.
