Cap Seven title hangs in balance

Wake Forest-Rolesville is ranked among the top teams in the area and is undefeated, but sometimes it doesn't feel that way.

The Cougars have been impressive some weeks. They shut out a strong 7-1 Southern Durham team 10-0 in WF-R's biggest test of the season so far.

But Wake Forest-Rolesville needed perfect execution in the final 12 seconds to beat Clayton (2-6) 16-14, and the Cougars had to come from behind to beat Enloe (3-4) 10-6.

Two teams, one title

Wake Forest-Rolesville coach Earl Smith spoke to his football team for 15 minutes on Saturday morning, emphasizing that despite Friday night's 16-15 loss to Millbrook, as painful as it was, WF-R still could win the Cap Seven 4-A title.

"The loss hurt them," Smith said later, "and that's good. The players should care.

"But by 10:30 on Saturday morning, their entire focus has to be on Leesville Road this week."

WFR blanks East

Wake Forest-Rolesville capitalized on three second-half turnovers to earn a hard-fought 19-0 victory over East Wake on Friday night.

The Cougars rushed for 196 yards, including 116 in the second half behind bruising running back Trea Jones. Jones racked up 104 yards for the game.

On the other side, the WF-R defense held the Warriors to 1 rushing yard in the last two periods.

Cougars blank Knights

Wake Forest-Rolesville rolled to a 42-0 victory over visiting Northern Durham Friday night to wrap up its nonconference play undefeated.

The Cougars worked both sides of the ball, effectively maintaining its status as the team to beat entering Cap Seven play.

The Cougars scored on four of their first five possessions and totaled 209 rushing yards at the half. The defense held Northern Durham (0-5) to negative-1 yard rushing in the first half. They also pressured quarterback Andy Henry, sacking him four times, and forced two turnovers.

Cougars turn to defense

Running back Trea Jones broke a defensive stalemate early in the second quarter, and Wake Forest-Rolesville never looked back as the Cougars downed Fuquay-Varina 26-6 in an NCHSAA 4-AA playoff game Friday night.

Top-seeded Wake Forest-Rolesville (14-0) will host the 4-AA Eastern Regional final next week at Heritage High against fifth-seeded Fayetteville Britt (13-1).

Wake Forest-Rolesville's hard-hitting defense allowed Fuquay-Varina only 156 yards of offense for the game.
