Denis, Devils hand Islanders second straight loss

Yann Danis made 23 saves and stopped four in-close attempts in the third period against his former Islanders teammates, helping the New Jersey Devils beat visiting New York 2-1 on Friday night for their fourth straight win.

Brian Rolston scored the winner on a power play and defenseman Cory Murphy added his first goal as a Devil. New Jersey has won 10 of its last 12 games.

Frans Nielsen scored for New York, and Martin Biron made 29 saves. The Islanders have dropped two straight after winning four in a row.

The game marked the return of Patrik Elias to the Devils' lineup. He missed the first 13 coming back from hip and groin surgery.

Also Friday

Capitals 4, Panthers 1: Jose Theodore stopped 28 shots, Brian Pothier had a goal and two assists and Washington - playing without injured star Alex Ovechkin for the second straight game - beat host Florida to end a three-game losing streak.

Brendan Morrison scored twice and Tyler Sloan added a goal for the Capitals (9-3-4) in the opening game of home-and-home series with the Panthers.

Nathan Horton scored for Florida.

Flyers 5, Sabres 2: Daniel Carcillo scored twice and Ray Emery made 28 saves to lead Philadelphia to its fifth straight victory over Buffalo.

Chris Pronger had a goal and assist, and James van Riemsdyk and Darroll Powe also scored. The Flyers (8-4-1) have won three straight games by a combined score of 17-5.

Derek Roy had a power-play goal and assist, rookie Tyler Myers also scored with the man advantage for Buffalo, and Ryan Miller made 32 saves. The Sabres (9-3-1) have lost two of their last three after an 8-1-1 start.

Late Thursday

Kings 5, Penguins 2: Jarrett Stoll scored the go-ahead goal with 7:51 to play, and Los Angeles roared from behind with a four-goal third period in a victory over Pittsburgh.

Coyotes 3, Blackhawks 1: Peter Mueller scored his first goal of the season and Martin Hanzal added a goal and an assist as host Phoenix beat Chicago.

Scottie Upshall also scored, and Ilya Bryzgalov made 31 saves for the Coyotes. , who snapped a two-game losing streak.

Flames 2, Blues 1 (OT): Dion Phaneuf's goal 2:50 into overtime gave visiting Calgary a victory against St. Louis.

Phaneuf fired a shot past Chris Mason, who made 27 straight saves after giving up an early goal to Jarome Iginla. Phaneuf, a defenseman, has six goals this season. Miikka Kiprusoff stopped 30 shots.

Rangers 4, Oilers 2: Ales Kotalik had a goal and two assists, and the New York Rangers halted a four-game, road-losing streak with a win over Edmonton.

Ducks 4, Predators 0: Jonas Hiller made 40 saves to earn his fifth NHL shutout, Teemu Selanne scored two goals to overtake Hall of Famer Jean Beliveau on the career points list, and host Anaheim beat short-handed Nashville.
