Schools can't suspend the rules

Fayetteville Pine Forest last week became the first team ever to lose two games in the N.C. High School Athletic Association football playoffs in the same year.

Pine Forest lost to neighboring Fayetteville Terry Sanford 49-28 in the first round but advanced when the courts agreed that the NCHSAA's rules requiring Terry Sanford to forfeit its victories for using an ineligible player were applicable.

Given a mulligan, Pine Forest almost pulled off a second-round upset before losing to New Hanover 26-23 in two overtimes.

Judge rules against Terry Sanford High

Terry Sanford High, which gained a football playoff berth after a judge's decision, has lost its chance to continue playing after another round in court.

The Fayetteville Observer reported that a judge ruled Tuesday to drop Terry Sanford from the title chase for using an ineligible player.

Judge Jack Thompson said he was surprised by testimony that the Terry Sanford principal was authorized to give a player a passing grade in a class which he had failed.

Eagles' comeback comes up short

Sanford, 63, sat in a wheelchair in a Wake County courtroom and listened as prosecutor Melanie Shekita detailed how, on April 17, 2005, he fatally shot Nathaniel "Zane" Winters, 45, and seriously wounded Winters' sister-in-law, Karen Winters, before torching her North Raleigh mobile home and catching on fire himself.

Slatter, Peachee rally

West Johnston's Dakota Peachee and Maraya Slatter saved their best for last Saturday, capturing respective individual titles in the N.C. High School Athletic Association 4-A East Regional cross country championships.

Peachee used a move on the final mile of the course to rally past Wilmington Hoggard's Charles Wofford in claiming the boys crown and leading the Wildcats to a third-place team finish.

Peachee completed the 3.1-mile circuit in 15:45.7. Wofford trailed at 15:49.11.
