Browns' Lewis slams Mangini

The Cleveland Browns are being beaten and beaten down by coach Eric Mangini.

Frustrated by another losing season, the veteran running back blasted Cleveland's first-year coach on Thursday, saying Mangini is pushing his players too hard in practice. But Lewis, who is one of Cleveland's six captains and intends to retire after the season, has not taken his complaints to Mangini.

Browns quiet on ouster of GM

Everyone inside Cleveland Browns team headquarters was pretty quiet on Tuesday concerning the convoluted ouster of George Kokinis as Cleveland's general manager.

Browns coach Eric Mangini offered no details about the team's decision to move on without his longtime friend and hand-picked GM.

"Anytime a decision like this is made it is difficult personally and professionally," Mangini said. "George is a friend of mine and I respect him and I wish his family well. I can tell you that for a variety of reasons things didn't work out. You never go into a situation like this with the intention of it not working out.

Mangini staying with Browns

Eric Mangini pulled off his biggest win yet.

Mangini will return for a second season as Cleveland's coach, a surprising personal victory following a four-game winning streak by the Browns that may have saved his job. New team president Mike Holmgren decided Thursday to retain Mangini, whose job seemed to be slipping away after the Browns started 1-11.

Mangini's staff has been asked to return as well.

Area players invited to NFL combine

Willie Young and Ted Larsen of N.C. State and Thaddeus Lewis and Vince Oghobaase of Duke have been invited to the NFL scouting combine, according to representatives of their respective schools.

Executives, coaches and medical personnel from all 32 NFL teams will attend the combine from Feb. 24 through March 2 in Indianapolis to evaluate prospective players for the draft.

Young, a defensive end, finished his career ranked second in N.C. State history with 45.5 tackles for loss. Larsen was a two-year starter at center after moving to the offensive line from defense in the spring of 2008.

Anderson named starter for Browns

Derek Anderson will replace Brady Quinn and start at quarterback for the Cleveland Browns on Sunday against Cincinnati.

Coach Eric Mangini has decided to go with Anderson, a Pro Bowler in 2007, over Quinn, a former first-round draft pick who opened the season as Cleveland's starter, but was benched at halftime last Sunday in Baltimore.

Mangini believes the Browns have a better chance to move the ball with Anderson.
