Ginyard "big-boyed,'' makes all-tourney team

NEW YORK -- A couple of quick notes after UNC's 87-71 loss to Syracuse in the championship game of the 2K Sports Classic:

* With about 16 minutes left, UNC senior Marcus Ginyard drove to the basket, collided with forward Arinze Onuaku, fell to the floor, and was slow to get up. He returned to the game, and had an ice pack on his side afterwards.

“Two-sixty met 210,’’ Ginyard explained. “I just got big-boyed.”

Double duty for Villanova

Villanova will be the sixth team to face both UNC and Duke in the same NCAA Tournament.

Florida (2000) and Louisville (1986) are the only teams to pull off the double-blue sweep in the same tournament. Louisville won the national title (beating Duke in the final) and Florida lost in the national championship game (to Michigan State).

Even Roy Williams, at Kansas in 1991, couldn't run the Tobacco Road gauntlet.

Heels claim another ACC soccer title

North Carolina and Florida State met in the championship match of the ACC Women's Soccer Championship for the third time in four years at WakeMed Soccer Park on Sunday. The game ended just like the others.

Third-seeded North Carolina beat top-seeded Florida State 3-0 for its 20th ACC tournament title in 22 years. The Tar Heels (17-3-1) have a 57-0-3 record in ACC tournament play.

"Every season has different kinds of challenges and also wonderful rewards," UNC coach Anson Dorrance said. "This season was no different."

FIU resists matchup against UNC

North Carolina "will be happy to play whichever team shows up" for its basketball season opener at the Smith Center on Nov. 9, associate athletic director Steve Kirschner said Tuesday.

The question is: What team will that be?

When the ACC schedule was released Tuesday, Florida International -- with new coach Isiah Thomas -- was listed as UNC's opening-game opponent in the Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament.

Chapel Hill police honor charity work

Retired Chapel Hill Police Detective J.D. Parks was honored Tuesday in Cary for his 14-year involvement with the Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run.

Parks has sold T-shirts and hats, hosted numerous events including reverse raffles, and tip-a-cop events at local restaurants. In addition, Parks was instrumental in organizing a golf tournament hosted by his agency that is now the largest Torch Run tournament in the state, raising more than $60,000 annually. This golf tournament is now in its 11th year and has generated over $685,000.

During Parks' 14 years, the Chapel Hill Police Department raised more than $825,000 for the athletes of Special Olympics.
