With CBS' exclusive coverage of the NCAA Tournament, WRAL-5 is always full of basketball in March. Friday night, the CBS affiliate will be overflowing.
With Duke and North Carolina State both playing their NCAA Tournament third-round games at the same time Friday, WRAL will carry the Wolfpack against Wisconsin at 7:27 p.m. while the Blue Devils game against Michigan State at 7:10 p.m. will be bumped over to WRAZ-50, a Fox affiliate.
Both stations are owned by Capitol Broadcasting, but it wasn't a clear-cut decision to share the wealth. CBS had to agree to let an NCAA game be shown on another station, bumping Fox's prime-time Friday lineup for another network's programming in the process.
CBS spokeswoman Leslie Anne Wade said that this wasn't the first time a CBS affiliate had farmed out an NCAA game to another station, but it was the first time it has happened this year.
"It has happened over the years," Wade said. "What we look to do is find an alternate carrier. Weve been pretty successful last few years.
"It's an embarassment of riches down there in North Carolina."
