Around 150 fans braved the heat to welcome home the national runner-up North Carolina baseball team this afternoon.

The team emerged from their bus at 4:20 p.m. to the familiar sound of the "Tar Heel" chant from the crowd outside of Boshamer Stadium.

UNC coach Mike Fox displayed the second-place trophy as his team, which lost to Oregon State in the finals of the College World Series on Sunday, thanked fans and signed autographs.

Oregon State also defeated Carolina in the series' final last year.

"It's great to have some people waiting on us," Fox said. "Our guys have fed off our crowd all year, and we've had great crowds here, so this means a lot that people would stand out in the heat to welcome us."

Fox said the team would meet at the stadium Tuesday morning for their final gathering to say goodbye to the seniors.

For now, the players were on their own to visit with the friends and family that had come to show their suppport.

"I can't thank them enough," senior Robert Woodard said of the gathered fans. "This program has stepped up in more ways than one, and fan support is another one. I can't wait to see the new stadium, and I really hope the fans of Chapel Hill continue to support our team like they have."
