Sophomore cornerback Jermaine Strong and sophomore offensive lineman Andre Barbour have been suspended indefinitely from the North Carolina football team for violating team and university policies, head coach Butch Davis announced in a news release this morning.

"It's disappointing to have to take this action," Davis said in a prepared statement. "Both players had a tremendous opportunity to help this football team."

They mark the fourth and fifth suspensions or dismissals since Davis was hired as head coach in November, joining running back Barrington Edwards, who was suspended and is no longer is on the team; offensive lineman Charleston Gray, who was dismissed; and safety Cooter Arnold, who has returned from an indefinite suspension.

According to a police report, Barbour, of Savannah, Ga., was cited around 12:45 a.m. on July 15 for possessing a half ounce or less of marijuana, a misdemeanor. The citation listed a location of the incident as the 100 block of East Rosemary Street in Chapel Hill.

A court date was set for Tuesday.

A criminal records check on Strong showed citations for minor traffic violations in 2005 and 2006.

A UNC football spokesman, Kevin Best, said by e-mail that the university does not have to release details behind what led to the suspensions.
