South Carolina announced Tuesday it will not hold its traditional "Tigerburn" pep rally before its rivalry football game with Clemson because of a beach fire that killed seven of the schools' students last month.
The rally where students burn a massive papier-mache Clemson Tiger has been a tradition at South Carolina for four decades, but students felt it wasn't right to hold the ceremony so soon after the Oct. 28 fire in Ocean Isle Beach that killed six USC students and one Clemson student, spokesman Russ McKinney said.
The student groups who help run the pep rally scheduled for Nov. 23 haven't decided what to do instead, McKinney said.
Clemson has canceled its own ceremony where students hold a mock funeral and burn in effigy "Cocky," the USC mascot. Instead, the students will hold a pep rally that organizers are calling "Fowl Fest."
TEXAS TECH COACH FINED $10,000: Texas Tech coach Mike Leach was fined a record $10,000 by the Big 12 Conference on Tuesday for his harsh criticism of game officials after last week's loss to Texas.
The fine doubled the previous high by the league, levied twice before, against Kansas coach Mark Mangino three years ago and former Kansas State basketball coach Jim Wooldridge during the 2005-06 season.
WYOMING COACH APOLOGIZES: Wyoming coach Joe Glenn said the obscene gesture he made toward the Utah sideline during Saturday's game was "stupid of me" and vowed it would never happen again.
He also said he won't change his approach to the game.
"It ain't going to change who I am. I'm an Irish guy, love to have fun with the game, love to interact with our fans, your fans, people in the business," Glenn said Tuesday in his first public remarks since the incident. "This doesn't scare me off."
SHOTS FIRED INTO VIRGINIA TECH PLAYER'S APARTMENT: At least two gunshots were fired into the apartment of a Virginia Tech student that football coach Frank Beamer identified Tuesday as cornerback Victor Harris.
Three Virginia Tech students were in the off-campus apartment where Harris lives, but police said no one was injured in the shootings early Sunday morning.
No one has been arrested, and Capt. Bruce Bradbery said Tuesday that police were looking for a small black car.
BRIEFLY: Stanford wide receiver Richard Sherman was reinstated to the team after serving a one-game suspension because of poor sportsmanship on the sidelines during a game earlier this month.
* Florida receiver Percy Harvin missed his fourth straight practice because of a sinus infection and migraine headaches. Coach Urban Meyer said Harvin -- who did not make the trip to Columbia, S.C., for the Gators' game against South Carolina on Saturday because of the illness -- could return to practice today.
