MT. GILEAD - West Montgomery rushed for 398 yards to defeat Siler City Jordan-Matthews 27-7 in the third round of the 1-AA state playoffs on Friday night.

The Jets (10-3-1) lost twice to their Yadkin Valley Conference rivals this season.

"We did some great things this year and I've appreciated everybody's effort," said Jordan-Matthews coach Marty Scotten. "Last week was our night. Tonight just wasn't meant to be."

The Jets, seeded 10th in the playoffs, defeated second-seeded Thomasville 33-21 to advance to the third round.

The Warriors (12-2) jumped out to a 14-0 lead behind two Vincent Jordan touchdowns. Jordan, who rushed for 139 yards, scored on runs of 75 and 6 yards.

Jordan-Matthews had its opportunities, but turned the ball over five times, including three interceptions. The Jets could have cut the Warriors' lead to 14-7 at the end of the first half, but were stopped on a fourth down deep in West Montgomery territory.

The Warriors capitalized on one of those turnovers when Dominique Drake scored on a 6-yard run to make it 21-0 in the third.

The Jets' lone touchdown came on a 1-yard run by quarterback Derrick Brown in the fourth quarter.

"Jordan has some weapons and we knew we had to shut down their running game," said West Montgomery coach Elbert Thomas, whose team limited Matthews' leading rusher, Earl Womble, to 57 yards on 19 carries.
