CORE SOUND DECOY FESTIVAL
WHAT: 20th annual event for the guild, founded in August 1987 and includes decoy carvers, painters and collectors, artists, photographers, taxidermists and anyone interest in waterfowl and wildfowl art, duck and goose hunting and waterfowling heritage
WHEN: 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, 10-4 Sunday
WHERE: festival, Harkers Island Elementary School, Harkers Island; auction, H. Curt Salter Building, formerly Core Sound Decoy Carvers Guild Hall, just before Harkers Island Bridge
DIRECTIONS: from Raleigh, take U.S. 70 East all the way past Beaufort and follow signs to Harkers Island (allow at least 3 1/2 hours)
SPECIAL EVENTS: Saturday, decoy competition judging 10 a.m., retriever demonstrations 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.; Sunday, head carving contest 1 p.m., retriever demonstration 1 p.m., loon calling competition 2:30 p.m., awards and raffle drawings (shotgun, decoy, print, carver's box, knives, quilt) 3:30 p.m.
AUCTION: Saturday, preview 10 a.m., auction 1 p.m.; more than 150 items

SPECIAL EVENTS: Friday, Seafood Extravaganza 7 p.m. (local seafood, wild game, homemade desserts; tickets $150, benefits museum's capital campaign); Saturday-Sunday, demonstrations and displays on boatbuilding, decoy carving, commercial fishing, quilting, traditional music, artwork and storytelling, plus good food; Sunday, community fellowship service, 8 a.m., led by Rev. Kerry Willis, native son of Harkers Island, now pastoring in Harrisonburg, Va.
