RALEIGH -- St. Augustine's routed cross-town rival Shaw 86-63 Saturday night at Broughton High School.
Early in the contest, the Bears found themselves on the wrong end of a double digit deficit as the Falcons took flight on several lopsided scoring runs. The Falcons scored 19 points on 16 first-half turnovers by the Bears.
Shaw cut into the St. Aug's lead, but a 12-footer and 3-pointer by Will Gill lifted the Falcons to a 42-28 advantage at intermission.
In the second half, Shaw looked to minimize their mistakes, but the Falcons, who shot 50 percent (14 of 28) from the field in the first half, continued to scorch the nets.
Early and often foul trouble forced Shaw coach Robert Brickey to go to his bench. Tyrone Bolden made an immediate impact for the Bears, scoring a layup and grabbing an offensive rebound that he put back in the hoop. But at the 8:30 mark, the Bears trailed 67-53. Things got worse for the Bears before they got better.
With a little less than three minutes left in the contest, a basket by St. Aug's Robert Shuler pushed the Falcons' lead to 82-61.
Shaw had three players finish in double figures. Will Graham led the Bears in scoring with 17 points. John Kornegay had 11 points and Cori Gaither 10 points in the loss for Shaw.
Shaw will begin string of three conference games in a seven days beginning on Tuesday against the Tigers of Saint Paul's College.
The game is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m. in C. C. Spaulding Gymnasium.
