The Carolina Hurricanes today traded two mainstays of their 2006 Stanley Cup championship team -- left wing Cory Stillman and defenseman Mike Commodore -- to Ottawa for veteran defenseman Joe Corvo and right wing Patrick Eaves.

Corvo and Eaves will be available for the Hurricanes' game on Tuesday at Boston.

"We're pleased to acquire a very good, young player in Patrick, and address a need for a mobile defenseman who can move the puck on the power play like Joe," General Manager Jim Rutherford. said in a statement.

"We are very thankful to Cory and Mike as two great contributors to the Hurricanes, including during our Stanley Cup run of 2006."

Corvo, 30, has played in 51 of the Senators' 56 games this season and ranks first among team defensemen with 15 power-play points (one goal and 14 assists). Among Ottawa defensemen, Corvo ranks second in points (27) and assists (21), is tied for second with six goals and is fourth with a plus-7 plus/minus rating, while averaging 17:41 of ice time per game.

Corvo's 27 points this season rank him tied 23rd among all NHL defensemen in scoring. The Oak Park, Ill., native is in his ninth professional season.

Eaves, 23, has played in 26 games with the Senators this season, recording four goals and six assists. The Fairbault, Minn., native suffered a separated shoulder on Nov. 21 at Buffalo and missed 24 games before returning to Ottawa's lineup on Jan. 15. He has missed Ottawa's last six games with a shoulder/neck injury suffered at Tampa Bay on Jan. 24.

In 157 NHL regular-season games, Eaves has notched 38 goals and earned 33 assists.

Stillman, 34, was fourth in scoring for the Canes this season with 21 goals and 25 assists in 55 games. He was the team's second-leading scorer during the Stanley Cup playoff run two years ago with 26 points.

Commodore, 28, whose mop of red hair made him an icon with Canes fans the past three seasons, had three goals and nine assists in 41 games this season.
