Arkansas track and field coach John McDonnell, who has led the Razorbacks to 42 national titles and 83 conference crowns, will retire at the end of the outdoor season, the school announced Monday.

McDonnell, 69, has won more national championships than any other collegiate coach in any sport.

"It is hard to imagine that any coach in intercollegiate athletics has had more influence on a program than John McDonnell has had on the men's track and field program at the University of Arkansas," athletic director Jeff Long said.

His most recent national championship was in 2006 in indoor track; his team won the SEC indoor title in 2007 for his last league championship.

McDonnell's 12 consecutive NCAA indoor track championships, from 1984 to 1995, made up the longest streak of national college titles in any sport.

BASKETBALL

OLIVER INTERVIEWS FOR STANFORD JOB: Top Stanford assistant Doug Oliver became the first candidate to interview for the Cardinal's head coaching vacancy Monday.

Oliver just completed his second season as the lead assistant at Stanford, where he also worked in the same capacity from 1986-1998. Fourth-year coach Trent Johnson left for LSU on April 10.

BANK SHOTS: Ohio State freshman center Kosta Koufos will declare for the NBA Draft but will not immediately sign with an agent, the school said Monday. By not signing with an agent, the 7-foot Koufos leaves open the possibility of returning next season.

* Arizona State assistant Mark Phelps was hired as Drake's men's basketball coach Monday, replacing Keno Davis.

* James Green was hired as the men's basketball coach at Jacksonville State, leaving Mississippi Valley State.

DUKE'S MANNO PICKED: Duke sophomore Christopher Manno was named the ACC baseball pitcher of the week after striking out a combined 16 batters over 7 2/3 scoreless innings last week.

Manno (4-0) struck out 12 in 5 2/3 shutout innings against Clemson on Saturday.

CAMPBELL PAIR HONORED: Campbell's Justin Lilly was named baseball pitcher of the week in the Atlantic Sun Conference after throwing his second consecutive complete game and striking out 10 Gardner-Webb batters. Camels teammate Brandon Scott was named player of the week after hitting .450 for the week.

LACROSSE: Duke's Ned Crotty shared the ACC player of the week honor.

MEN'S GOLF

CONFERENCE USA TOURNAMENT: East Carolina carded a second-round total of 12-over par to drop into a seventh-place tie with UCF on Monday at Texarkana, Ark. The Pirates had a 36-hole total of 13-over-par 589, 21 strokes behind leader Memphis entering today's final round.

Andre Thorsen led ECU individually with a even-par 144 total, which tied him for 12th.

ATLANTIC SUN TOURNAMENT: Campbell was in fourth place, and freshman Zak Drescher was tied for fourth place individually following the first round of the tournament in Braselton, Ga.

Blake Palmer of Gardner-Webb shot a 6-under-par 65 to grab the individual lead by four strokes.
