Sanderson holds on for baseball victory

Sanderson scored one run in the sixth inning to take the lead, and Mark Peterson and Eric Brommer preserved the 4-3 baseball victory over Richmond County in the second round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association playoffs.

Peterson pitched the first six innings, and Brommer survived a bases-loaded threat in the seventh to get the save.

Sanderson scored the winning run in the sixth after Kyle Wigmore reached on a two-base error.

Peterson delivered the winning single.

"We were down 3-0 before we got the first out," said Todd Laughlin, referring to two Richmond County homers in the first. "We fought back and earned the win. It will be good to be at home Friday night." Jordan will play at Sanderson on Friday.

JORDAN TOPS WEST: Matt Francis tossed a three-hit complete game, yielding only one unearned run, in a 4-1 second-round baseball victory over West Johnston.

Lee Murray delivered key hits for Jordan, driving in runs with hits during a two-run first inning and a two-run third inning.

DORSETT BLANKS PINECREST: Brennan Dorsett threw a two-hit shutout in Leesville Road's 2-0 baseball win over Southern Pines Pinecrest.

"Brennan did a tremendous job," Leesville coach Chad Smothers said. "We couldn't have asked for a better performance. He got stronger as he went along and threw strikes all night."

Leesville will play at Durham Riverside, a 6-2 winner over Wilmington Ashley.

APEX ROLLS: Corey Thompson had four hits, including a home run, as Apex pounded Fayetteville Cape Fear 11-1 to take the 4-A second-round baseball victory.

DARROCH FANS 14: Josh Darroch struck out 14 and allowed one hit in South Granville's 7-0 3-A baseball victory over Northeast Guilford.

Pratt Maynard, an N.C. State recruit, and Keith Godwin each hit home runs.

SOUTH JOHNSTON BLANKS KNIGHTS: South Johnston's Jerry Glover threw a three-hit shutout against Northern Nash in the 3-A baseball playoffs.

MILLBROOK, FUQUAY FALL: Millbrook and Fuquay-Varina had their baseball seasons end with road losses.

Fuquay lost to Lumberton 3-2, while Millbrook lost 5-1 at perennial power Greenville Rose.

GIBBONS ADVANCES: Cardinal Gibbons, the 2007 2-A dual-team champion, advanced to the third round of the 2-A dual-team tennis tournament with a 6-0 win over Pittsboro Northwood.

FALCONS, CAPS UP NEXT: Green Hope and Broughton took easy second-round victories in the NCHSAA 4-A dual-team tennis tournament.

Green Hope stopped Wilmington Hoggard 7-2, while Broughton defeated Chapel Hill 6-3.

The two powers are scheduled to play in the third round next week.

The individual championships are Friday and Saturday.

In other dual-team play, Millbrook bopped Apex 5-2.

WF-R BLANKS SSS: Wake Forest-Rolesville held Smithfield-Selma to two hits in a 7-0 4-A first-round softball win.

FUQUAY WINS: Fuquay-Varina's Jordan Smith and Alex Ryan combined to throw a two-hitter in a 9-0 softball win over Wilmington Hoggard. Smith struck out eight and Ryan fanned four.

GARNER USES RALLY: Garner scored five runs in the sixth inning to defeat Leesville Road 5-2 in the first round of the softball playoffs.

The Trojans used a home run by Kimmy Stewart and a triples by Mary Scott Powell and Morgan Barbour in the crucial rally.

"Garner just started hitting like it can do," Leesville coach Suzanne Tadlock said.
