Road Worrier:  County tax collectors hope their tax revenues will increase when the state Division of Motor Vehicles starts collecting county car property taxes. Car owners will write one check to DMV to cover the state registration fee and the county property tax.

Starting later this year, North Carolinians will stop paying property taxes to their local county tax collectors -- and start paying the county taxes directly to the state Division of Motor Vehicles, instead. DMV will collect the tax when it collects car registration renewal fees, and send the tax money back to the county.

The state Department of Transportation will post new signs bumping the legal limit up to 70 mph, from the current 65 mph, on a 21-mile stretch of the loop from U.S. 70 near Brier Creek to the U.S. 64/264 interchange near Knightdale.

Drivers in northern Wake County will see a slight increase in the speed limit later this month on the 540 Outer Loop.

A short circuit Thursday morning was blamed for the outage at Division of Motor Vehicles headquarters on New Bern Avenue, which houses 350 to 400 employees and the agency’s computer network. The outage continued Friday.
