HOLLY SPRINGS - A rainy start to spring may have dampened demand for rain barrels in Holly Springs on Saturday.

The town sold 81 rain barrels at Bass Lake Park from 8 to 11 a.m., town spokesman Mark Andrews said. That compares to 228 the last time the town sold barrels, in mid-March; then, the drought showed little signs of letting up, and some customers were turned away empty-handed.

Sales might have been affected by the town's decision April 1 to ease water restrictions, allowing use of automated irrigation and sprinkler systems three times a week.

The town expects to hold another sale in midsummer.
