Cary inspectors issued 54 water restriction violation notices Thursday, the first day of the town's ban on automatic irrigation sprinklers, said Mike Bajorek, the town's interim public works and utilities director.

As a result of the restrictions, Cary's water consumption dropped about 2 million gallons Thursday, Bajorek said.

Last week's rains have raised by more than 2 feet the elevation of Jordan Lake, which supplies water to Cary, Morrisville, Apex, Research Triangle Park and now Durham, which is buying water from Cary, Bajorek said.

But Jordan Lake is still low, the drought remains, and weather forecasts predict an unusually dry winter, he said.
