State web site tracks water use

On Oct. 22, Gov. Mike Easley asked North Carolinians to cut their water use in half. Now the state has made it easier to see how your public utility is doing.

A new Web site allows people to track the water conservation efforts in their communities. It shows daily average water consumption by week.

The results have fallen short of a 50 percent reduction, according to the state's numbers. Raleigh, which also provides water to several surrounding towns, saw its water consumption drop about 20 percent since the week before Oct. 22. Cary is down 29.5 percent while Durham has seen water use drop about 17 percent.

The state site is incomplete. Recent weeks for Holly Springs are missing, and the Orange Water and Sewer Authority is mysteriously absent altogether.

To find the list, go to www. ncwater.org and click on the "weekly use report" link, or go directly to www.ncwater.org/Drought_Monitoring /reduction/weeklyreport.php.
