Another round of thunderstorms could strike central and coastal North Carolina this afternoon, especially east of Interstate 95, the National Weather Service says.

Some isolated storms could be severe, with a threat of damaging wind gusts hitting 60 mph or greater and hail the size of nickels, according to the weather service.

The storms and showers are expected to develop between 2 p.m. and 10 p.m. in association with a weak cold front and unseasonably strong upper level system.

On Sunday, storms moving through the Triangle dumped 1.3 inches of rain at Raleigh-Durham International Airport, according to the weather service.

There were reports of trees down at Purnell and New Light roads in northern Wake County. Observers also spotted penny- to nickel-sized hail near the intersection of South Miami Boulevard and Alexander Drive in Durham County about 7:22 p.m. and penny-sized hail about 9 p.m. near U.S. 64 and Jordan Lake in Chatham County.

After today, skies are expected to remain clear in the Triangle through Friday, July 4th. The forecast calls for a 30 percent chance of rain Saturday and Sunday.
