Scattered thunderstorms this afternoon in Central North Carolina will give way to a beautiful weekend, according to the latest forecast from the National Weather Service.

As a cold front drifts slowly across the area, storms may develop this afternoon and continue tonight, with some becoming severe. Wind gusts in excess of 50 mph, large hail and frequent lightning are all possibilities, especially in counties in the east.

After today, the forecast calls for dry weather and cooler temperatures as high pressure builds over the area. The Weather Service is calling for highs reaching 88 degrees Friday through Sunday, with mostly sunny skies.

The weekend temperatures represent relief from this week's highs in the upper 90s. But they actually are about normal for this time of year, according to Weather Service records.

The region still needs rain, as does the rest of North Carolina, which remains mostly in drought. So far this month, the Weather Service has recorded only one-tenth of an inch of rain at Raleigh-Durham International Airport; the normal rainfall to date is about three-fourths an inch.
