The Triangle is likely to break another record for warmth today with a forecast high of 78 degrees. But the balmy temperatures and clear skies won't be around for long.
A strong cold front is expected to cross central North Carolina late this afternoon and evening, according to the National Weather Service. The combination of unseasonably warm humid air and strong southwesterly winds will bring a slight chance of severe thunderstorms and possibly damaging wind gusts, the Weather Service says.
Except in thunderstorms, rainfall amounts are expected to amount to less than one-fourth an inch.
The chances for severe weather are highest between 3 and 11 p.m. today. Windy conditions, meanwhile, are expected this afternoon and evening with sustained winds of 15 to 25 mph and gusts of up to 40 mph.
Today's forecast high would shatter the current record for the date of 70 degrees set Feb. 6, 1999, at Raleigh-Durham International Airport. The high Tuesday of 76 degrees at RDU beat the prior record of 74 degrees, set Feb. 5, 1991.
Temperatures will be cooling, however, with the highs falling to 59 on Thursday through Saturday and 48 on Sunday.
