Mary Catherine Benson and Joseph Morrison Grew of Raleigh were married on Saturday, May 28 at seven o’clock at the Saint Mary’s Chapel in Raleigh. The Reverend Richard Thomas Clayton and The Right Reverend Joseph Clark Grew II, uncle of the groom, officiated the ceremony. The parents of the bride hosted a reception following the ceremony in Smedes Hall at Saint Mary’s School. The parents of the groom hosted the rehearsal dinner at the Merrimon-Wynne House the evening before the wedding. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Dale Benson of Raleigh. She is the granddaughter of Mrs. John Ray Benson and the late Mr. John Ray Benson and Mrs. Johnnie William Blackwelder and the late Mr. Johnnie William Blackwelder, all of Concord, NC. The groom is the son of Dr. and Mrs. Robert Sturgis Grew of Raleigh. He is the grandson of the late Dr. and Mrs. Walter Skellie Hunt, Jr. and the late Mr. Raymond Lacy Ballard of Wilmington, NC and the late Mr. and Mrs. Roger Sanderson Hewlett and the late Mr. Henry Sturgis Grew, Jr. of Lawrence, NY. The bride was escorted by her father. Mrs. Ryan Martin Ley, sister of the groom, of Wilmington, NC, and Mrs. Judson Victor Root of Raleigh served as matrons of honor. Bridesmaids were Mrs. James Alvin Barmore Jr. of Charlotte; Mrs. Paul Hampton Elder, Mrs. Webster Glenn Harrison, Miss Kathryn Anne Schley, all of Raleigh, Miss Elizabeth Kristin Carpenter, cousin of the bride of Vale, NC, Mrs. Robert Carswell Parsley of Winston-Salem, Mrs. Britt Armfield Preyer, Jr., of Greensboro; Mrs. Matthew Whitaker Sherrod of Knoxville, Tenn., Miss Lindsey Aubra Suggs of Wilmington, NC, and Miss Kathryn Coble Thompson of Eden, NC.The groom’s father and Mr. Joseph Lee Stiles of Richmond, Va. served as best men. Dr. Ann Benson Crutchfield, the aunt of the bride, of Albemarle, NC, served as vocalist. The organist was Mr. Stephen Loren Abner of Raleigh.The bride is a graduate of Saint Mary’s School in Raleigh and Wofford College in Spartanburg, SC. She was presented by the Terpsichorean Club at the 2002 North Carolina Debutante Ball. The groom is a graduate of Ravenscroft School in Raleigh and Hampden-Sydney College in Hampden-Sydney, Va. The bride is employed by Bagwell & Bagwell Insurance and the groom is a graduate student at North Carolina State University.Following their honeymoon, the couple will reside in Raleigh.
