Volunteers at five Harris Teeter stores in Wake, Durham and Johnston counties asked shoppers to support Feed the Need with donations of nutritous, nonperishable food or cash for three hours on Saturday, April 26. The results – $1103 in cash and 3,112 pounds of food – are equivalent to 8,100 meals and top 2013 totals.

Feed the Need is a partnership of The News & Observer, the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina, with the sponsorship of Harris Teeter and Syngenta. Together, they are raising awareness about children at risk of hunger, collecting nonperishable food and collecting cash and food donations to support the Food Bank's programs to feed children.

In eight years, Feed the Need sponsors and supporters have donated the equivalent of more than 1.8 million meals.
