Gen ATLAS Is the Long Awaited Return of Shadow of the Colossus Creator Fumito Ueda
Few game creators have a catalog as distinctive as Fumito Ueda. Across Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, and The Last Guardian, he built a reputation for creating lonely worlds, enormous creatures, and stories that rely more on atmosphere than exposition. Now, nearly a decade after The Last Guardian, Ueda and his studio genDESIGN have finally revealed their next project: gen ATLAS.
Officially announced during Summer Game Fest 2026, gen ATLAS is a single player open world action adventure game being developed by genDESIGN and published by Epic Games Publishing. The game is currently planned for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC through the Epic Games Store. No release date has been announced yet.
The project was originally revealed at The Game Awards 2024 under the temporary name Project Robot. At the time, very little was known about the game beyond a brief teaser featuring a massive mechanical figure. The new reveal finally confirmed both the official title and the first substantial look at gameplay.
According to official information released alongside the trailer, players awaken alone on a vast and mysterious planet. As they explore, they encounter colossal robots, strange environments, and the remnants of a large-scale project whose purpose remains unknown. The world itself appears to be constantly changing, featuring enormous structures, abandoned facilities, and what the developers describe as an ever changing sea.
A Different Direction for genDESIGN
While gen ATLAS immediately carries many of the visual trademarks associated with Ueda's previous games, it also appears to be taking the studio in a new direction.
The reveal trailer showcased a science fiction setting filled with giant mechanical beings rather than the fantasy inspired creatures seen in Shadow of the Colossus and The Last Guardian. It also included glimpses of third person combat involving firearms and encounters with large robotic enemies. These elements represent a notable shift for a creator whose previous projects focused more heavily on exploration, puzzle solving, and environmental storytelling.
Despite the new science fiction focus, many familiar qualities remain. The trailer emphasizes solitude, massive landscapes, towering creatures, and a sense of mystery. Rather than explaining its world in detail, gen ATLAS appears content to let players piece together its secrets through exploration and observation, a design philosophy that has defined Ueda's work for more than two decades.
