Durham Performing Arts Center has added a new date to its upcoming Broadway season. Part of its “encore” series of returning shows, “The Sound of Music” will be back for a short run in spring 2018.
The tour will be back for three days, April 20-22. Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 17 at dpacnc.com.
The Rodgers & Hammerstein musical first visited DPAC in December 2015. Tony Award-winning director Jack O’Brien spoke about the new production before its Durham tour stop in late 2015.
He said then that it was created to be a tour, not necessarily bound for Broadway.
“I wanted it to be fun again, and this is a musical beloved by America. Why shouldn’t we do it for America?” O’Brien said in 2015.
Another Rodgers & Hammerstein musical, “The King and I,” is at DPAC through Sunday, wrapping up its 2016-17 Broadway season.
DPAC’s 2017-18 season
DPAC announced the eight new shows of its 2017-18 Broadway season in February. It also announced that the Broadway blockbuster by Lin-Manuel Miranda, “Hamilton,” will be at DPAC in 2018 as part of the 2018-19 season.
The 2017-18 season opens in September with “Circus 1903.” Featuring puppetry, the production will be on stage Sept. 26-Oct. 1.
“The Little Mermaid” will be at DPAC Oct. 17-22. With design that uses aerial work to make the cast appear to be underwater, this show is produced by Pittsburgh CLO and Kansas City Starlight.
Andrew Lloyd Webber’s sequel to “The Phantom of the Opera,” called “Love Never Dies,” is on stage Oct. 31-Nov. 5.
“School of Rock,” the musical based on the movie starting Jack Black about a wannabe rock star and the students he turns into a band, will be at DPAC Nov. 28-Dec. 3.
“On Your Feet!” – a show about pop star Gloria Estefan and Emilio Estefan – will be here Jan. 2-7. The Broadway production closes in August.
Theatrical classic “Les Miserables” will be on stage Jan. 30-Feb. 4.
A new production of “The Color Purple,” which won the 2016 Tony Award for Best Musical Revival, is on stage April 3-8. An earlier tour version visited DPAC twice.
“Waitress,” featuring music by Sara Bareilles, will be at DPAC May 1-May 6.
Other encores already announced have been “RAIN: A Tribute to the Beatles” Feb. 23-24 and “The Phantom of the Opera” Feb. 28-March 11.
While the current Broadway season at DPAC is wrapping up, another encore, “Motown the Musical,” will be at DPAC this August. That tour returns Aug. 1-6.
