Theater Picks: PlayMakers stages ‘Violet,’ based on Doris Betts novel

North Carolina author Doris Betts’ novel, “The Ugliest Pilgrim,” is the basis for the musical “Violet,” in which a disfigured girl sets out from Spruce Pine, N.C. to find a faith healer, but finds inner beauty through the people she meets along the way. PlayMakers Repertory Summer Youth Conservatory stages the Jeanine Tesori and Brian Crawley Broadway show in Paul Green Theatre.
