Triangle Reads: What local book clubs are up to

Dansforth & Friends Book Club is a neighborhood club that formed in July 2004, says member Patty Warren.

Tell us about your club. The Dansforth & Friends Book Club started out as a neighborhood group of women who loved books. Eventually we expanded to include some women friends of our members. We are currently at 15 members, our maximum. We meet at each other’s homes during the year, and the member who hosts also picks the book we read that month. She provides appetizers, desserts and beverages. In July we have a potluck at our clubhouse, and in December we have a catered dinner at a member’s home and do a secret book exchange. We share these books with each other throughout the year.

What are you reading now? “Big Little Lies” by Liane Moriarty

What is your club’s favorite book? We have had quite a few favorites, including, “Me Before You” by Jojo Moyes, “The Light Between Oceans” by M.L. Stedman and “An Untamed State” by Roxane Gay.

What’s unique about your club? Our club has been together for more than 10 years. Even though members have come and gone, we have maintained a remarkable group of women of varied ages. We all bring distinctive perspectives and life experiences to our book choices, so we end up reading books we may not necessarily have chosen for ourselves. And this always leads to animated discussions! We have two aspiring authors in our group, and we take trips together when we can.
