Book group is all about food

The Eating Our Words book club is one of the interest groups of the Duke Campus Club, says club member Marie Abbruzzese. The Duke Campus Club is an organization connecting Duke affiliated women in the community.

Tell us about your club. The name, Eating Our Words, signifies the book club’s focus of combining interests in food and literature. Books chosen have a food-related theme of one sort or another. The group makes recipes either from the book or related to the book and then meets for lunch at a member’s home. As an example, when the group read the book, “The Man Who Ate Everything” by Jeffrey Steingarten, about a newly hired food critic who overcomes a lot of food dislikes and phobias, members brought a dish based on one of the things the author originally disliked. Other times the group will have lunch at a restaurant with a theme related to the book read.

What are you reading now? “Heat: An Amateur’s Adventures as Kitchen Slave, Line Cook, Pasta-Maker, and Apprentice to a Dante-Quoting Butcher in Tuscany” by Bill Buford

What is your club’s favorite book? “Being Dead Is No Excuse: The Official Southern Ladies Guide to Hosting the Perfect Funeral” by Gayden Metcalfe and Charlotte Hays was an especially fun read.

What’s unique about your club? This is definitely an interactive book club. The intertwining of reading books related to food and the culinary arts, plus cooking for and sharing with the group food from or based on the theme of the book makes for a combination that intrigues and excites.
