Recommended read: “All the Birds in the Sky” by Charlie Jane Anders. This book is a modern science fiction/fantasy love story that passes itself off as “literary” fiction, which is great, because it deserves as big an audience as it can get. It’s a fun way to watch a witch and a scientist wind their way in and out of each other’s lives.
Currently reading: “Patience,” the new graphic novel by Daniel Clowes
What is your favorite book that nobody’s heard of? “Claire DeWitt and the City of the Dead” by Sara Gran. It’s set in post-Katrina New Orleans and stars a grownup girl detective who uses the I Ching, mysterious texts, and a lot of drugs to solve a mystery.

What movie was better than the book? I was impressed with the way Gillian Flynn chopped “Gone Girl” down to movie length!
What book did you keep from your childhood? I don’t have many of my childhood books, but I just came across my copy of “Ed Emberley’s Drawing Book of Animals.”
