Illustrator’s favorites include graphic novels

Andrew Neal is a freelance designer and illustrator who also works at the Orange County Public Library.

Recommended read: All the Birds in the Sky” by Charlie Jane Anders. This book is a modern science fiction/fantasy love story that passes itself off as “literary” fiction, which is great, because it deserves as big an audience as it can get. It’s a fun way to watch a witch and a scientist wind their way in and out of each other’s lives.

Currently reading:Patience,” the new graphic novel by Daniel Clowes

What is your favorite book that nobody’s heard of?Claire DeWitt and the City of the Dead” by Sara Gran. It’s set in post-Katrina New Orleans and stars a grownup girl detective who uses the I Ching, mysterious texts, and a lot of drugs to solve a mystery.

What movie was better than the book? I was impressed with the way Gillian Flynn chopped “Gone Girl” down to movie length!

What book did you keep from your childhood? I don’t have many of my childhood books, but I just came across my copy of “Ed Emberley’s Drawing Book of Animals.”

Where do you go for book recommendations? I get recommendations from the library, local book stores, and friends!
