DVD releases March 7: Oscar-nominated ‘Jackie,’ empowering ‘Moana’

(R; 95 minutes; Fox Searchlight): This Oscar-nominated drama features Natalie Portman in a remarkable portrayal of First Lady Jackie Kennedy, recounting her husband’s assassination and the days surrounding the event. The film is structured around a series of interviews Jackie gave to writer Theodore White (Billy Crudup) for Life magazine soon after JFK’s death, with flashbacks illustrating the horrifying details of the ordeal and the grieving widow’s fight to secure her husband’s legacy while managing her own overwhelming grief. Portman portrays Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy with a strength and dignity that does her subject justice.

(PG; 103 minutes; Walt Disney): A CG-animated family film about Moana, an adventurous Polynesian teenager (Hawaiian newcomer Auli’i Cravalho) on the verge of becoming the first female leader of her tribe. But first she must complete a daring mission to save her people, with the help of a legendary demigod named Maui (Dwayne Johnson). The film earned overwhelmingly positive reviews for its gorgeous animation, its message of empowerment for girls (there’s no love story at all – imagine that!) and its feel-good soundtrack, which features original music by Tony Award-winning Lin-Manuel Miranda (his song “How Far I’ll Go,” performed in the movie by Cravalho, was nominated for an Oscar).
