A roundup of the new films opening in the Triangle this week. “Norman” opens on Friday but “Alien” and “Wimpy Kid” open at some theaters Thursday night.
“Alien: Covenant,” directed by Ridley Scott, is the second prequel in the “Alien” series, and features strong performances from Katherine Waterston and Michael Fassbender. “Covenant” uses the mythology established by “Prometheus” and fuses it with the story and character types of “Alien.” It sounds like a home run for fans of the franchise.

In “Norman,” a delightful semi-screwball comedy from Israeli writer-director Joseph Cedar, Richard Gere plays the title character, an aging New York gadfly whose eye is always on the main chance. From The Washington Post: “Is Norman a macher, a schnorrer or a mensch? Thanks to the filmmaker’s sensitive touch and Gere’s sympathetic performance, he gets to be all three. And that calls for mazel tovs all around.”

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul
This one sounds a bit like a nightmare, to be honest. “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul,” the fourth in the “Wimpy Kid” franchise, is called “a dirge of unfunny scatological material, techno-anxiety and child endangerment masquerading as familial bonding.” The review also called it “a horror” and “grim.”
