Based in Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains, the Steel Wheels aren’t exactly folk, certainly not “old-time” or bluegrass. But the energetic acoustic quartet is an Americana amalgam of original songs grafted onto a sturdy base of Appalachian roots. Featuring Tent Wagler’s distinctive tenor lead vocals, the band has been featured on NPR and has appeared at MerleFest, Kerrville Folk Festival, Gettysburg Bluegrass Festival and other prominent venues from coast to coast. Friday night, the Steel Wheels will roll into Raleigh for a PineCone-sponsored show at Fletcher Opera Theatre. Info at dukeenergycenterraleigh.com.
