Win Rolling Stones tickets, be more impressed than our 1965 reviewer!

Deadline draws nigh for our Rolling Stones trivia contest, which offers a VIP package including free tickets to their July 1 Raleigh show. See details on that here and do it soon, because the entry deadline is 11:59 p.m. Thursday.

You might notice that the first question on the trivia quiz pertains to the Stones’ 1965 show at NC State’s Reynolds Coliseum. I’ve spent the past few weeks talking to people who were at that show, which has been great fun, and we’ll have a bunch about that in the June 28 Sunday paper to preview this year’s show.

Concert-goers’ memories of that long-ago November night span the spectrum, from great to terrible, although a lot more of the former than the latter. But if you opened the News & Observer the next day (Nov. 11, 1965), here is how the review of the concert began:

“This Could Be The Last Time” the Rolling Stones come to Raleigh, but England’s second-class Beatles left town after headlining Wednesday’s performance at Reynolds Coliseum $12,500 richer.

The five Stones “earned” their money by wailing several of their popular songs, as well as some of the not-so-popular, to a screaming crowd of 5,000 high school and college students.

Wow. There will be plenty more about this, too, in the June 28 paper.
