The Americans (10 p.m., FX) – Season 3 starts with Elizabeth losing important intel and Stan trying to fix his marriage. The big question this season will involve the issue of 14-year-old Paige getting pulled into the family spy business.

Also on tonight . . .

Penguin Post Office (8 p.m ., UNC-TV) – “Nature” looks at a colony of 3,000 gentoo penguins that gathers each November near the Port Lockroy post office on the Antarctic Peninsula. They gather there to find mates, build nest and raise their young. Naturally, they’ve become a tourist attraction for cruise-ship passengers from around the world.

Empire (9 p.m., Fox) – Lucious tries to steal a hot artist from his rival at Safe House Records while Cookie tries to mend her damaged relationship with son Hakeem (the one she beat bloody with a broom in the pilot).

Sinkholes: Buried Alive (9 p.m., UNC-TV) – “NOVA” examines sinkholes, which can happen gradually or suddenly. The report explains why they happen and includes video of dramatic collapses.

Suits (10 p.m., USA) – The show resumes its fourth season with Louis gaining leverage in his quest to become a named partner of the firm.
