What to Watch on Thursday: ‘A Chef Life’s Holiday Special’ revisits red velvet cake

A Chef’s Life Holiday Special (10 p.m., UNC-TV) – From 2014, chef Vivian Howard’s holiday celebration features Southern cooking and Hanukkah traditions. Chef Scott Barton (Voyage), Vivian’s mentor and an expert on Southern food, shows her how to prepare Hoppin’ John, and North Carolina’s Bill Smith (Crook’s Corner) shares his secrets for his world famous corned ham. Then Vivian recreates her childhood memories as she bakes red velvet cake with her sister and celebrates the first night of Chanukah with Ben’s family, making traditional foods and lighting the menorah.

Shrek the Halls (8 p.m., ABC) – The ogre’s plans for a cozy Christmas are derailed when Donkey, Puss in Boots and the rest of the gang show up for the fun.

Great American Baking Show (9 p.m., ABC) – Ayesha Curry and Anthony “Spice” Adams host the third season.

Pearl Harbor: Survivors Remember (9 p.m., History) – Heroes give firsthand accounts of the Dec. 7, 1941, attack on Pearl Harbor.

The Orville (9 p.m., Fox) – In the season finale, Ed and Kelly consider getting back together. Meanwhile, Ed and the crew discover a planet from another universe.

A Very Discovery Christmas (9 p.m., Discovery) – Discovery channel families share their favorite Christmas traditions, including trimming the tree, making bush gifts, hunting holiday meals and making moonshine.

A Chef’s Life (9:30 p.m., UNC-TV) – Vivian makes “pig and a puppy,” a dish that merges corn bread with another Southern staple.

Top Chef (10 p.m., Bravo) – Season 15 heads to Colorado.
