True Detective (9 p.m., HBO) – The second season of this acclaimed series debuts with a different story and different cast. This time, Colin Farrell, Taylor Kitsch and Rachel McAdams are the cops and Vince Vaughn is the bad guy they’re up against. Set in California, the first episode involves the disappearance of a city manager, which upsets a lucrative land scheme connected to Vaughn’s mobster character.

Ballers (10 p.m., HBO) – In this new comedy, which has been described as “Entourage” in the world of sports (pro football, to be precise), Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is a former NFL linebacker working as a money manager for other players. It also stars Rob Cordry and John David Washington, and will feature cameos from NFL greats.
The Brink (10:30, HBO) – A new political comedy starring (and written by) Tim Robbins, who plays a secretary of state who constantly clashes with the administration’s situation-room hawks.
Poldark (9 p.m., UNC-TV) – The 40-year-old Masterpiece series gets a reboot when Aidan Turner stars as the redcoat who returns to Cornwall after the American Revolutionary War to discover his home and family in turmoil. The 8-episode series also stars Eleanor Tomlinson and will feature Robin Ellis, who played Ross Poldark in the original Masterpiece series.
The Crimson Field (10 p.m., UNC-TV) – This new series is about three nurses who volunteer to work in a tented field hospital in France during World War I.
The Last Ship (9 p.m., TNT) – In the 2-hour Season 2 premiere, Chandler and his fractured team join forces with an underground resistance.
