Regular viewers of WRAL and WRAZ Fox 50 newscasts have noticed an absence of late. Jackie Hyland, co-anchor of Fox 50 newscasts at 4 and 10 p.m. and co-anchor of the 5:30 p.m. newscast on channel 5, is no longer with the station.
Hyland’s last anchored newscast was the 5:30 p.m. edition on June 18.
Steve Hammel, vice president and general manager of WRAL and WRAZ, confirmed Hyland’s departure in an email to The News & Observer.
“We appreciate her 3+ years of service and wish her the best as she pursues new opportunities,” Hammel wrote. “A permanent replacement will be named in the coming weeks.”

Hyland, who was hired in 2011 after the departure of Pam Saulsby, took time off earlier this year due to a medical problem, which she wrote about in a post on the Go Ask Mom blog the WRAL website:
“Many of you know that I experienced some vocal issues that started towards the end of last year. I was diagnosed with Dysphonia. It is the medical term for disorders of the voice. I have been working on getting better ever since. It has not been an easy road. At times, it was lonely and frustrating. The folks at the Duke Voice Center have been truly wonderful in helping me understand my situation and get better.”
Hammel said Hyland’s departure is not related to her previous medical situation.
