Laverne Cox, the transgender actress best known for her role as Sophia on the Netflix series “Orange is the New Black,” will be the featured guest at the first Lyceum Series event of the 2015-16 season at N.C. Central University in Durham.
Cox is not only the first transgender actress to be nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award (a nominee in the Outstanding Guest Actress category), she is also the first to appear on the cover of Time magazine. (The Emmy broadcast airs Sept. 20 on Fox.)
In a press release from NCCU, it is noted that Cox’s popularity from the Netflix series has given her a platform from which to speak and write about issues facing transgendered people.
The university’s annual Lyceum Series appearances are free and open to the public. Future appearances include a three-day visit by the Dayton Contemporary Dance Co., which will be on campus Nov. 2-4, offering master class dance instruction and a public performance.
